Warehouse Management and Package Tracking

The Warehouse Management and Package Tracking Solution from FDC Solutions consists of three integrated applications that work together to provide a full-featured system for managing warehouse operations, tracking package status and location, and notifying internal and external customers about the status of their orders. Each component of the Warehouse Management and Package Tracking Solution is described in more detail below.

WMSv2 (or just v2) is our advanced warehouse management system (WMS), designed to enhance operational efficiency and streamline warehouse processes.

Seamlessly integrated with your ERP’s order entry system using interface parameters that were designed by parts operations specialists, v2 offers real-time data synchronization and automation for both outbound and inbound order processing. The user-friendly interface and customizable options allow v2 to adapt to various warehouse sizes and needs, driving improved supply chain performance and allowing your people to manage their warehouse operations with greater precision and agility.

Integration with a wide variety of automated storage and retrieval systems, including AutoStore™ empowered by Kardex, vertical lift modules, and carousel systems ensures that your warehouse can scale and modernize without limits.

What's in a name?

We are frequently asked to help dealers implement v2 to replace existing warehouse management systems that do not meet their evolving needs, so we like to think of our warehouse management system as a dealer’s migration to its second generation of warehouse management. Hence, we call it v2.

What sets v2 apart?

Several key features separate v2 from other warehouse applications that are available to Caterpillar dealers.


Browser-based. Unlike other warehouse applications, v2 is presented as an intuitive, browser-based application, enabling simplified setup and streamlining the training of new warehouse personnel in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment.

Platform-independent. At a time when dealers find it more difficult to find internal personnel to manage their IBM i systems, v2 can be deployed on IBM’s midrange servers or Windows servers, offering flexibility for dealer IT managers.

Point-to-point traceability. The data collection and logging features built into v2 allow warehouse personnel to easily track the progress of individual parts as they move through the various warehouse management processes.

Real-time monitoring. The ability of v2 to monitor the activity level of each user allows managers to better understand how user activity impacts process results and to use v2’s messaging functions to communicate with active users.

v2 Features

Several specific features of v2 enable your warehouse operations to run smoothly.

Inbound Processing features include receiving functions such as

  • the ability to process advanced shipping notices (ASNs), parts from any supplier, stock transfers, and returns
  • crossdock functionality for warehouses that also serve as distribution centers
  • one-step (receipt to bin) and two-step (receipt to dock, followed by putaway) receiving
  • putaway processing (customized putaway rules, location assignment based on volume, and putaway queue and sequencing)

Outbound Processing features include order fulfillment functions such as

  • customized order escalation rules and order tracking within the warehouse process
  • support for pick planning as well as picking, packing, staging, directed staging, shipping, and order pickup processes
  • parameter-driven control over pick sequence, zone picking, and batch picking
  • production of contents labels at the time of packing
  • support for hose build processing

Inventory Management features include

  • transaction history and a discrepancy dashboard
  • support for parts consolidation
  • daily cycle counts by part number or location
  • support for specific inventory counting approaches, including building a count plan or count calendar, two-sided counting, and opportunistic counting
  • parameter-driven control over location count distance and count frequency for individual parts

K*Track is our advanced package tracking application, designed to provide real-time visibility into the status and location of both inventory and non-inventory items, including customer orders and core returns. Its versatile tracking and notification capabilities enhance both internal and external delivery processes.

K*Track supports a wide variety of delivery scenarios (e.g., branch deliveries, customer deliveries, shop bay pickups). Fully integrated with v2 (our warehouse management system), the application supports customer kiosks and counter-assisted pickups to enable a streamlined delivery experience and uses signature capture and image capture to improve accountability.

What's in a name?

K*Track is named in honor of Keith Rodricks, one of the original developers of our package tracking application, who died unexpectedly before the application was completed.

What sets K*Track apart?

Several key features separate K*Track from other package tracking applications that are available to Caterpillar dealers.

Technology. K*Track works on any browser-based device and can be hosted on your servers or hosted by us as part of a SaaS subscription and hosting bundle. Its companion mobile app has a disconnected mode, allowing the application to be used anywhere by anyone to enhance external delivery efficiency.

Search. K*Track’s powerful intelligent search functionality permits a full or partial character string search that allows users to search for packages by document number, purchase order number, tracking code, work order number, or delivery location.

Integration. K*Track is fully integrated with Caterpillar’s Dealer Business System (DBS/DBSi) and can be integrated with any ERP system.

K*Track Features 

Several specific features of K*Track enable a streamlined delivery experience for your team members and customers.

Tracking features provide real-time visibility into the status, location, and package history of ordered parts inventory and non-inventory goods (e.g., laptop PCs, worn cores, machine attachments) in many scenarios, including

  • route deliveries to branches or customer drop boxes
  • dynamic or ad-hoc deliveries to customer locations or jobsites
  • internal deliveries to dealer shop bays
  • customer self-serve kiosks in will-call areas
  • counter-assisted customer order pick-up
  • deliveries via connected RF devices
  • deliveries via the companion app in online or offline mode

Verification features improve accountability by offering

  • signature capture at customer self-serve kiosks, at parts counters (using tablet devices), and at customer locations and jobsites (using the mobile app)
  • image capture at customer drop boxes or on demand
  • signature capture or image capture for delivery to dealer shop bays
  • electronic storage of all captured signatures and images for easy recall

K*Track’s Hold To Complete feature enables dealers to pre-order parts for service jobs and hold/track the parts that come in until the job is ready to begin.

Order Management Cycle (OMC) is our event-based notification system, designed to enhance internal and external delivery processes.

Using a combination of short URL SMS messaging and email, OMC detects a wide variety of events to trigger notifications to individual or group recipients. OMC also enables Caterpillar dealers to easily comply with Caterpillar’s Global Dealer Standards for notifying parts.cat.com customers of the status of their orders.

OMC Features

Several specific features of OMC enable your internal and external customers to set realistic expectations for deliveries and to work efficiently while awaiting order delivery.

Versatility. Text messages or email messages can be sent to individual or group recipients, including customers, internal purchasers, parts counter personnel, parts expeditors, product support sales representatives, and shop personnel.

Notifications based on single events. Notifications can be triggered by single events, including

  • Order ready for pick-up (partial and full)
  • Order picked up (partial and full)
  • Order delivered (partial and full)

Notifications based on multiple conditions. Notifications can also be triggered by multiple conditions. For example, a parts delivery to Customer A at Drop Box 1 could trigger a notification to group A1 while a parts delivery to Customer A at Drop Box 2 could trigger a notification to group A2.

Message content. Messages sent by OMC contain specific information about individual orders, including carrier tracking info from contracted delivery companies (e.g., UPS, FedEx, DHL).

Verification. OMC records a success/failure indicator for each sent message, and a history of all sent messages is retained for easy recall.

Development Roadmap for OMC

As part of the product roadmap for OMC, we will soon add WhatsApp and Twitter as options for message delivery, and we’re working on native mobile apps for iOS and Android devices.
